Restoring Ecosystems, Empowering Communities: Our Fight Against Deforestation in Ghana
Deforestation continues to threaten biodiversity, livelihoods, and climate resilience across Africa. In Ghana’s Red Volta Valley, Agrointroductions Ghana has been working hand-in-hand with local communities to reverse this trend through an integrated conservation approach.
From March 2023 to March 2024, with support from the Russell E. Train Reforestation Grant (WWF-EFN), our team implemented the Integrated Community Conservation Approach to Fight Deforestation (Phase II).
What We Achieved
- 22,650 trees planted (81% native species such as African Rosewood, Shea, and Mahogany).
- 145 hectares restored across farmlands, reserves, and communal lands.
- Two community nurseries and seed banks established for sustainable restoration.
- 80+ farmers, women, and youth trained in climate-smart agriculture, agroforestry, and restoration techniques.
- CREMAs (Community Resource Management Areas) formed to strengthen community stewardship.
- School campaigns and radio programs delivered conservation education to thousands.
Despite challenges such as heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires, the project achieved an impressive 78% tree survival rate, proving the resilience of community-led restoration.
Beyond Tree Planting
This project was not only about reforestation—it also promoted:
- Agroforestry & agroecology models to improve food security and soil health.
- Alternative livelihoods like beekeeping, organic farming, and shea processing.
- Capacity building for women, youth, and indigenous groups to lead climate action.
Impact
The results are tangible: healthier soils, improved biodiversity, diversified incomes, and stronger local ownership of conservation. Communities are now better equipped to protect their forests, manage natural resources sustainably, and build resilience against climate change.
